Another factor that influences leak down is the hydraulic oil. John Deere puts in low viscosity HyGard oil at the factory. I have known of a couple tractor owners that found using the regular HyGard oil improved the leakdown rates of their loaders significantly. If you look in the owners manual, both Hygard and low viscosity hygard are recommended for J.D. CUTS. The regular hygard will just take longer to warm up in cold weather.

The link you describe being bent is also used with other tractors. The link is adjustable in length and must be set to the correct length which varies according to the tractor. This length is given in the installation instructions. I am guessing that the person doing the installation left out an important step.

I guess I don't find it too surprising that the switches are holding up pretty well. Here's my thinking. First the PTO switch is the same one that has been used on the 4500-4700. Most of the other switches are the same general design as the cruise control switch that was used on the 4000 series. The only switch that looks new to me is the MFWD control switch. All the other switches have been on tractors and exposed to the weather for some time and I am not hearing of many problems here or from John Deere owners I know.

Also, I have learned from a mechanic that the only switch required to be in place for the eHydro to work is the PTO switch. If the PTO switch is not in place the safety logic won't let the engine run, but all the others can be missing and the tractor will still drive--you just lose the functions that the switch activate.

I agree with you that this sounds like a controller issue that is well known to Deere and has been solved for some time now. My employer's tractor exhibited these exact same symptoms and after the controller change there has been no problem at all. I don't know that your dealer will pay attention to a bunch of unkowns off tractor bulletin boards, but this has been discussed several times and the behavior of the tractor is described the same each time.

Art, probably the best head to head comparisons that I have been able to do have been between the New Holland TC45D and the John Deere 4610 and between the Kubota 3710 and John Deere 4310. In both cases, I felt that I could get more pushing force out of the John Deere in B range than I could with the comparably sized Kubota and New Holland. The 4310 could spin the wheels in B range while pushing a loader into hard dirt, but the Kubota required shifting to low range to do the same. The TC45D is a really nice tractor with the high/low hydro in addition to the high/low range gears. But I was somewhat surprised again that to get a bucket full of dirt, that John Deere 4610 could often (but not always) do it in B range, while the TC45D required shifting both the range gears and hydro to low speed. In higher gears, the Kubota and New Holland tractors don't seem to run out of engine power, but it seemed to me that the hydros hit relief pressure sooner than the Deeres, thus preventing the power from getting to the wheels.

For someone that hasn't done head to head comparisons under similar working conditions, they might never know the difference. With experience, you learn to use the tractor you have effectively. And different things matter to different folks. That's why even though I am convinced that the Deere Ten Series hydros are the best thing going for getting work done, there are and will continue to be very satisfied owners of other brands.

I hesitate to add more to an already long thread, but I was given some information by the guy that replaced the controller on my employers tractor that might be of some interest here. He said that according to Deere, the controller didn't "go bad." He said the controller was fine, but there was a software issue that caused a false error code. The error clears when the tractor is turned off and restarted. The weird thing, he said, was that it never seems to show up on most tractors, but shows up a lot on others. By the way, he said the controller is located just left of the steering column and requires removing the left green plastic panel to get to it. About a 15-20 minute job he said.

I haven't done it myself, but I watched another person demo the backhoe removal. It took only a couple of minutes and he never had to leave the tractor. With the seat in the forward position, the operator operated the levers while kneeling on the seat and reaching over the back of the seat. He started by pushing down on the ground with the hoe to release pressure on a pin, which he pulled straight up. I can't remember the rest of the procedure, but in a matter of seconds he eased the tractor away from the hoe, then uncoupled the hydraulic connectors and the hoe was left sitting supported by the bucket and stabilizers. Pretty slick.

As for price, others will have to help you.

By this time I would suggest following up with your dealer again and ask them to call the John Deere Dealer Technical Assistance Center again to follow up and confirm the original instructions. The suggestion to "cut the wire" (if that is what they really said) doesn't strike me as coming from the factory. If you follow the wire coming from the electro-magnet you will see that after about 9 inches it has an electrical connector. There is no need to cut the wire. Just unplug it.
